Thinking about applying to a PA program?

Applying to PA program(s) can be daunting process but don’t worry, I’m here to provide you with some tips and tricks that will help make sure you have all your ducks in a row when it comes time for you to submit your application. Let’s get started!

Qualifications

Before applying for PA school,  there are some qualifications you should meet first. The most important qualification is having a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Most programs also require applicants to have at least two years of healthcare experience (this could include nursing, EMT/paramedic, medical assisting, etc.). Additionally, you will need to take certain prerequisite courses such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and psychology before applying.

Timeline

The timeline for applying to PA school can vary depending on the program but generally speaking the application process should begin at least one year prior to the start of classes. This allows enough time for applications to be reviewed and accepted or denied by the admissions committee. Generally speaking, applications open in June or July and close in October or November. However, this can vary depending on the program so it's important to check with your desired school ahead of time to confirm their timeline for accepting applications.

Average Age of Applicants & New Graduates

The average age of applicants for physician assistant programs is typically between 26-33 years old; however this varies greatly from program to program and is dependent on factors such as prior healthcare experience and educational background. The average age of new graduate PAs is also typically around 26-33 years old after completing their schooling and passing board exams with flying colors.

Applying for a physician assistant program may seem overwhelming but if you stay organized and keep track of all the necessary requirements it can be much less stressful than it initially seems! Be sure to research each individual PA program’s qualification requirements as well as their timeline for accepting applications so that you know exactly what needs to be done when applying.
